At Mission Coders, we want to expose our kids for a fun learning experience that might stimulate their interest in computer and engineering. Whether or not our children pursue coding, engineering, or computer science as a career, we see so much potential to teach our kids’ valuable life skills for logic, problem-solving, and teamwork.

Our children are born with tablets and computers and those technologies are proceeding in an incredible rate. Proficiency of those new technologies cannot be accomplished in one hour lesson just like learning how to play music, speak a foreign language, or become a professional athlete. The successful one usually starts young and builds their passion and skills over time.

The Government of India has set up the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM) at NITI Aayog. Realizing the need to create scientific temper and cultivate the spirit of curiosity and innovation among young minds, AIM proposes to support the establishment of a network of Atal Tinkering Laboratories (ATL). ATL is a workspace where young minds can give shape to their ideas through hands-on do-it-yourself mode and learn innovation skills. The vision is to ‘Cultivate 1 Million children in India as Neoteric1 Innovators’.

Objective:

The objective of this scheme is to foster curiosity, creativity, and imagination in young minds; and inculcate skills such as design mindset, computational thinking, adaptive learning, physical computing, etc.

What is this program about?

The ‘Tinkering Lab Framework’ consisting of developers and supporters of this initiative constantly aims at the betterment of facilities meted out to the students. Currently, the application process has been completed and efforts are on to construct ATLs in such a way that maximum students benefit from this program and India’s dream of a smarter yet pragmatic education system is fulfilled. ATL is a space where children and youngsters will be able to conceptualize and develop scientific ideas. The best thing about the program is that they will be able to do their own thing and that too without any hindrance and get all the help that they need. This way they will also learn the different skills that are needed to innovate on a grander scale. The students will be provided a number of kits that will help this entire process.

STEM is an acronym for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math. At Mission Coders we focus on STEM areas together not only because the skills and knowledge in each discipline are essential for student success, but also because these fields are deeply intertwined in the real world and in how students learn most effectively.

Instead of teaching the four disciplines as separate and discrete subjects, STEM integrates them into a cohesive learning program based on real-world applications. According to a report by the website STEMconnector.org, by 2018, projections estimate the need for 8.65 million workers in STEM-related jobs. We are here to help kids acquire the skills to fill those spots.

Cohesive Learning

What distinguishes STEM from the traditional science and math education is the cohesive learning environment and how it demonstrates that the scientific method can be applied to everyday life. It teaches students computational thinking and focuses on the real world applications of problem solving. As mentioned before, STEM education must begin when students are very young:

Elementary school - 

  • Provides the introductory and foundational STEM courses that lead to success in challenging and applied courses in secondary grades.

  • Introduces awareness of STEM fields and occupations.

  • Provides standards-based, structured inquiry-based, and real-world problem-based learning that interconnects STEM subjects.

  • Stimulates student interest in “wanting to” rather than “having to” take further STEM related courses.

  • Bridges and connects in-school and out-of-school learning opportunities.

Middle school -

  • Introduces an interdisciplinary program of study consisting of rigorous and challenging courses.

  • Continues to provide standards-based, structured inquiry-based and real world problem-based learning that interconnects STEM-related subjects.

  • Bridges and connects in-school and out-of-school learning opportunities.

  • Increases student awareness of STEM fields and occupations, especially for underrepresented populations.

  • Increases student awareness of the academic requirements of STEM fields and occupations.
